本作では全13篇を「marriage」「family album」「still together」の三部に分けて収録する。各篇の日本語初出は1950年から1975年に及び、「Evenings at the Pool」の原作「プールサイド小景」は芥川賞受賞作、「Still Life」の原作「静物」は1960年の新潮社文学賞受賞作、「Picture Cards」の原作「絵合せ」は1971年の野間文芸賞を受賞している。
