日本古典文学研究者Edward Kamensの編集による、『源氏物語』を英語圏の大学教育でどのように扱うかを、教材と授業方法から考察した論集。1993年に刊行されたペーパーバック版で、Modern Language Association of Americaの「Approaches to Teaching World Literature」シリーズ第47巻にあたる。
本書では、第1部「Materials」では授業で用いる英訳、研究書、読書案内、推薦文献を整理している。第2部「Approaches」には『源氏物語』の教授法を扱う17篇の論考を収める。各論では翻訳を通して古典語へ近づく方法、短期授業の構成、宗教と美術、建築と庭園、絵画資料、語り、ジェンダー、女房、近代作品との比較などを扱う。寄稿者一覧、参考文献、索引を収録。

Edited by Edward Kamens, this volume presents teaching materials and seventeen essays on Murasaki Shikibu's The Tale of Genji, primarily as taught through English translations. Its two parts cover texts and scholarly resources, followed by approaches involving translation, narrative, gender, visual materials, and comparative reading. Paperback edition, 1993.
