本書は1994年3月にニューメキシコ州サンタフェ近郊で開催された国際シンポジウムの成果をもとに編まれている。全体は「Questioning Zen」「Questioning Nishida」「Questioning Modernity」「Questioning the Kyoto School」の4部で構成される。第1部では戦時下の禅や鈴木大拙の社会・国家観を扱い、第2部では西田幾多郎とナショナリズムや戦争との関係を検討する。第3部では「近代の超克」や近代国家をめぐる思想を取り上げ、第4部では田辺元、西谷啓治、京都学派とナショナリズムの問題が論じられる。
