アメリカの政治哲学者であるジョン・ロールズによる、公正な社会制度を支える正義の原理を社会契約の枠組みから考察した政治哲学書。
全体は「Theory」「Institutions」「Ends」の三部で構成される。第一部では公正としての正義、正義の諸原理、原初状態を論じる。第二部では平等な自由、分配、義務と責務を扱う。第三部では善の合理性、正義感、正義と善の関係を検討する。
本作は1971年の初版刊行後、ロールズは1975年のドイツ語版をはじめとする各国語訳に向けて英語本文を修正した。本改訂版はそれらの変更を英語本文へ取り込み、基本的自由、基本財、正義の二原理、財産所有民主制と福祉国家の区別などを見直している。1990年11月付の改訂版となる本書では、序文で修正点と初版から維持した基本的な立場を著者自身が説明している。

John Rawls presents justice as fairness through the original position, the principles of justice, equal liberty, distributive shares, duty, and the sense of justice. Divided into three parts titled Theory, Institutions, and Ends, the volume includes a preface for the revised edition explaining changes incorporated into the English text. Revised edition, 1999.
