本作は1952年に発表され、1953年にピューリッツァー賞を受賞した。ヘミングウェイが存命中に刊行を見届けた最後の主要なフィクションとして知られる。本書は1996年に刊行されたScribner Classics版であり、Charles Scribner Jr.による序文とC. F. TunnicliffeとRaymond Sheppardによる挿絵を収録する。

Ernest Hemingway's novella follows Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman, through his prolonged struggle with a giant marlin in the Gulf Stream. This edition includes the introduction "The Ripening of a Masterpiece" by Charles Scribner Jr. and illustrations by C. F. Tunnicliffe and Raymond Sheppard. A later printing of the 1996 Scribner Classics hardcover edition.
