本作は幼年期から学校生活、インドでの仕事、南アフリカでの経験、自宅での生活へと進み、自身の歩みを八つの章に分けて記している。人生の出来事だけでなく、作家としてどのように仕事と向き合い、作品を書いてきたかが語られる点も特徴となっている。口絵にはPatrick Synge-Hutchinsonによるキプリングの肖像レリーフを収録する。
『ジャングル・ブック』や『キム』を書いたキプリングが、自身の生涯と創作の関係をどのように振り返ったのかを知るための一冊。

An autobiographical work by Rudyard Kipling, arranged in eight chapters from "A Very Young Person" to "Working-Tools". The volume includes a frontispiece portrait after a plaque by Patrick Synge-Hutchinson, together with illustrations of "Naulahka" and "Bateman's". Centenary Edition, reprint, 1964.
