A novel by Aldous Huxley following the young poet Sebastian Barnack and his encounters with two contrasting figures, his hedonistic uncle Eustace and the religious bookseller Bruno Rontini. The novel addresses questions of desire, death and spiritual life, themes Huxley also explored in The Perennial Philosophy, published in 1945. First published in the United States in 1944; this British edition is the fifth impression, 1950.
