本書は伝承的王朝から始まり、ゾロアスター教と『アヴェスター』、サーサーン朝、イスラームの興隆、セルジューク朝、モンゴル支配、ティムール朝、サファヴィー朝、ザンド朝、ガージャール朝へと時代を進める。後半ではペルシア湾、オマーン、中央アジア、アフガニスタン、ロシアやイギリスとの外交関係まで扱っている。巻末には条約抄録、イギリス・ロシア・フランスの対ペルシア使節一覧、官職・軍事・宗教称号、貨幣、度量衡、季節・祭礼、ペルシアおよび中央アジアの距離表を収録する。巻頭にはペルシア、アフガニスタン、バルチスタンを示す折込地図1点を備える。

Markham's historical survey of Persia, covering the traditional early dynasties through the Sassanian, Islamic, Safavid, Zand, and Qajar periods, with later sections on the Persian Gulf, Oman, Central Asia, Afghanistan, and diplomatic relations. The volume includes appendices on treaties, diplomatic representatives, Persian titles, currency, weights and measures, seasons, festivals, and distances, together with a folding map. First edition, 1874.
