原著『Lexikon chinesischer Symbole』は1983年にドイツで刊行された。英語版は1986年にRoutledge & Kegan Paulから初版が刊行され、本書はRoutledgeによる1989年のリプリントにあたる。
本書は動物、植物、自然現象、身体、色、数字、日用品など多くの象徴を取り上げている。各項目では名称や図像が示す意味を説明し、文学、民間伝承、習俗、宗教、日常生活における意味や用例を紹介する。中国語の同音語を利用した連想や文字と図像の関係にも触れ、象徴が視覚だけでなく言葉の響きからも形づくられることを示している。
美術品や文学作品に現れる図像や言葉が、中国文化のなかでどのような意味を担ってきたかを知ることのできる1冊。

This reference work presents approximately 400 symbols found in Chinese literature, customs, religion, art and everyday life. It includes an introduction entitled "The Symbolic Language of the Chinese," an alphabetical dictionary and a bibliography, and was translated from the German by G. L. Campbell. English edition, 1989 reprint.
