本書はアティーシャの「A Lamp for the Enlightenment Path」とその注釈を、Richard Sherburneが英訳し注を付したもの。冒頭にはダライ・ラマ14世による序文、訳者による序論、略語一覧を収録する。原典は68節から成る。三宝への帰依、菩提心、出家生活、菩薩戒、瞑想と智慧、密教実践へと教えを進める。短い詩文によって修行の段階を示し、その後に注釈を配して内容を展開している。巻末にはThe Five PathsとTantric Initiationsの二つの図表、用語集、参考文献、索引を収録する。
