著者はBuddhaghosaの『Atthasalini』、Vasubandhuの『Abhidharmakosa』、Asangaの『Abhidharmasamuccaya』を主要な資料としている。本書では広範なアビダルマ文献を網羅するのではなく、哲学と心理学に関わる主題を選んで構成している。アビダルマを単なる教理の分類として扱わず、心と経験を理解するための思想体系として読み解いていく。巻末には索引と表を収録している。
