本書は1930年代の中国での戦闘から第二次世界大戦の終結と占領期の始まりまでを扱う。全体は24章で構成されており、日中戦争、開戦、占領地と銃後、軍隊生活、731部隊、戦時労働、沖縄戦、広島への原爆投下、捕虜体験、戦争犯罪、戦没者をめぐる記憶を、時期や主題ごとに配された証言から記録している。軍人、看護師、労働者、外交官、報道関係者、芸術家、女性、子どもなど、立場の異なる人々への聞き取りを収めている。
戦争を一つの共通した記憶としてまとめず、立場によって異なる経験と語りを読み比べるための一冊となっている。

Japan at War records personal accounts of Japanese wartime experiences from the conflict in China in the 1930s through the end of World War II and the beginning of the occupation.
