本書ではダーウィン的な仕組みが、人間の価値、社会制度、科学的知識をどこまで説明できるのかを中心に議論を進める。前半では自然主義的認識論、生物学的知識の限界、還元主義、発生生物学、遺伝学を扱う。中盤では倫理の生物学的根拠、道徳的実在論、契約論とトロッコ問題を検討する。後半では進化論と経済学の関係、生物学的資質をめぐる政治哲学、ヒトゲノム計画と科学政策を取り上げる。巻末には参考文献と索引を収録。

The eleven collected essays address naturalistic epistemology, reductionism, genetics, moral theory, contractarianism, biological endowments, and the Human Genome Project.
