本書ではプロテスタントが文字どおりの意味と歴史的な意味を重視しながら、なぜ寓意的な表現へ繰り返し向かったのかを中心に議論を進める。
第1章では1649年のWilliam FranklinとMary Gadburyをめぐる宗教的事件を取り上げ、自己とキリストの同一化をめぐる問題を検討する。続く章では寓意と予型論、神の子であることと寓意の関係、聖書とパウロ書簡に基づく自己認識を扱う。後半ではジョン・バニヤンの回心自伝『Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners』と寓意物語『The Pilgrim's Progress』を読み、宗教的経験、自己認識、寓意の関係を考察する。巻末に注と索引を収録している。
宗教改革期に聖書、自己、歴史がどのような言葉で表されたのかを考えるための一冊となっている。
