イギリスの哲学者・社会思想家であるハーバート・スペンサーによる、生物学の諸現象を進化の法則から体系化した研究書。原書である第1巻は1864年、第2巻は1867年に刊行され、スペンサーが構想した総合哲学体系の一部を成している。本書はUniversity Press of the Pacificが2002年に刊行した全2巻で、1904年版の本文を変更せず、可読性を高めるためにデジタル処理を施した復刻版となっている。
第1巻では有機物と生命の関係から論を始め、成長、発達、構造、機能、適応、個体性、遺伝、変異、分類、分布、生物進化を扱う。第2巻では植物と動物の形態的発達、生理的発達、生殖と増殖の法則を論じる。
19世紀に、生物学が個別の専門領域ではなく、生命全体を説明する哲学的体系として構想されていたことを考えるための重要な揃い。

Herbert Spencer presents the general principles of biology as interpreted by the laws of evolution, addressing organic matter, growth, development, adaptation, heredity, variation, morphology, physiology, and reproduction. Issued in two volumes, the work is divided into sections on the data, inductions, and evolution of biology, followed by morphological development, physiological development, and the laws of multiplication. Facsimile reprint of the 1904 edition, digitally enhanced for legibility and published in 2002.
