19世紀末のNew Woman文学を代表する作家の一人であるGeorge Egertonによる、女性の感情、欲望、結婚、母性、自立を描いた二つの短篇集。『Keynotes』は1893年、『Discords』は1894年にイギリスで初刊行された。本書は両短篇集の初のイギリス版をもとにオフセット印刷し、各短篇集の扉、献辞、目次、別ノンブルを残して全12篇を収録した1983年のVirago版である。
作品では、結婚や母性をめぐる社会的な役割、女性の性と欲望、経済的な制約、自己決定への希求が描かれる。出来事の因果を細かく説明するよりも、登場人物の感覚や心理の移り変わりに焦点を置く。Martha Vicinusによる新たな序文は、Egertonの生涯と1890年代の文学的背景をたどりながら、女性の内面や経験を短篇の中心に置いた作品の特徴を論じている。ノルウェー滞在中にIbsenやHamsunらの作品に親しんだことや、刊行当時に作品が大きな反響を呼んだ経緯にも触れている。

Keynotes & Discords brings together two short-story collections by George Egerton, first published in Great Britain in 1893 and 1894. The volume contains twelve stories and retains the separate title pages, dedications, contents pages and pagination of the two collections, with a new introduction by Martha Vicinus. This copy is the 1983 Virago edition, offset from the first British editions.
