アメリカの哲学者・観念史家であるアーサー・O・ラヴジョイによる、文学、哲学、宗教、美学に現れる観念と言葉の意味を歴史的に考察した論文集。ジョンズ・ホプキンズ大学のHistory of Ideas Clubが創設25周年を迎えるにあたり、創設者であるラヴジョイに歴史関係の論文集の刊行を依頼して成立した。収録論文の多くは学術誌などに先行発表されたもので、ラヴジョイ自身が選定し改訂した。Don Cameron Allenによる序文を収録し、巻末には1898年から1948年までのラヴジョイの著作目録と索引を備える。初版は1948年に刊行された。本書は1952年刊の第2刷となる。

Essays in the History of Ideas collects sixteen studies on the historiography of ideas, Rousseau, eighteenth-century thought, Romanticism, literature, religion, and aesthetics. The essays were selected and revised by Arthur O. Lovejoy, with a foreword by Don Cameron Allen and a bibliography of Lovejoy's published writings from 1898 to 1948. Second printing, 1952.
