ウィルキー・コリンズ、チャールズ・オールストン・コリンズ、モーティマー・コリンズ、ジョゼフ・シェリダン・レ・ファニュなどを取り上げており、収録人物の多くは後期ジョージ朝に生まれ、1860年代に活動の盛期を迎えた同時代人であり、ヴィクトリア朝の文学と芸術を人物のつながりから描いている。巻末には索引を収録。カラー口絵には『白衣の女』を題材とした図像を用いており、本文には図版12点を収録する。ヴィクトリア朝文学を代表作だけでなく、その作品を生んだ人物関係や生活の背景から理解するために必読な一冊。

The volume considers the influence of heredity, environment, places of residence, and personal experience on their literary work, and includes one coloured frontispiece and 12 additional illustrations.
