イギリスの美術批評家・思想家であるジョン・ラスキンによる、芸術における真実と美を自然観察と絵画表現から考察した全5巻の美術批評である。J・M・W・ターナーの作品を擁護する目的から書き始められ、1843年の第1巻から1860年の第5巻まで刊行された。本書は全5巻を4冊に製本した揃いで、第1巻と第2巻が1冊に合本されている。第1巻は1867年刊の第7版、第2巻は1869年刊の第5版、第3巻は1867年刊の第2版、第4巻は1868年刊の第2版である。最終第5巻は1860年刊の初版にあたる。第3巻から第5巻には、ラスキン、ターナーをはじめとする画家の作品や素描に基づく口絵、鋼版画、木版図版が収められている。

Modern Painters is John Ruskin's five-volume study of art, beauty, nature and visual truth, originally published between 1843 and 1860. Beginning as a defence of J. M. W. Turner, it develops through discussions of colour, light, space, imagination, landscape, mountains, leaves and clouds, with frontispieces and plates after works by Ruskin, Turner and other artists. This complete set is bound as four books, with Volumes I and II bound together: Volume I is the seventh edition of 1867, Volume II the fifth edition of 1869, Volumes III and IV the second editions of 1867 and 1868, and Volume V the first edition of 1860.
