各項目には事件の経緯、被告人の経歴、裁判と判決、その後に科された刑罰を収録する。標題紙に掲げられたとおり、逸話、所見、演説、告白、刑に臨んだ人々の言葉も含まれている。本文には人物の肖像、裁判の場面、刑務所、犯罪に関わる出来事を描いた図版が多数挿入されている。
犯罪がどのような物語として記録され、刑罰が社会に向けてどのように語られていたのかを知ることができる貴重な揃い。

The Newgate Calendar records crimes, trials, convictions, and punishments in England from the beginning of the eighteenth century, with anecdotes, observations, speeches, confessions, and last exclamations. Compiled by Andrew Knapp and William Baldwin, attorneys at law, the four volumes include portrait frontispieces and numerous illustrations. J. Robins and Co. four-volume edition, published from 1824 to 1828 and later bound in two books.
