AUTHOR：Abram Setsuzau Kotsuji(小辻節三)

日本のヘブライ語学者であり東京のInstitute of Biblical Researchの創設者兼所長であったAbram Setsuzau Kotsujiによる、セム系アルファベットの起源と発達を考古学と古文字学から考察した研究書。1937年刊行初版。
本書は二部で構成される。第1部では、セム系アルファベットの起源をめぐる歴史的・考古学的な議論を扱い、第2部では、セム系アルファベットの北方系と南方系を古文字学の立場から比較する。本文には音節文字、印章、碑文、アルファベット表などを示す33点の図版を収録する。巻末には文字資料を系統的に配列した図、参考文献、索引を付している。
文字がどのように受け継がれ、地域や時代によって姿を変えてきたのかを、実際の字形から考えることのできる非常に重要な一冊。

The Origin and Evolution of the Semitic Alphabets examines the origins and development of Semitic writing through archaeological evidence and palaeographical comparison. It is divided into two parts and includes 33 illustrations, a bibliography, and an index. First edition, published in 1937, with no edition statement in the book.
