本書は哲学諸学派が一つの原理を現実全体として扱い、互いを排除してきたことを問題とする。理性、直観、信仰、精神、物質を単独で最終原理とする立場を検討し、それぞれの体系が捉えた側面を複合的な構想へまとめようとする。観念論と唯物論、理性と直観のような対立を一方の勝利で終わらせず、両者を含む哲学の可能性を考えるための重要な一冊。

This philosophical study examines idealism, materialism, scholastic synthesis, process philosophy, and irrationalism in relation to the criterion of reality. Sheldon criticizes philosophical systems that treat a single principle as the whole of reality and proposes a synthesis based on polarity. First edition, 1954.
