本書は19世紀の初期渡米者から始まり、土地と仕事を求めた移住者の生活、反日感情の高まり、移民排斥、ハワイの日系社会、二世と帰米二世を取り上げる。後半では日米開戦前後の状況、移動と収容、忠誠をめぐる問題、公正を求める運動、戦後の再出発までを全18章で構成している。巻末には1870年から1970年までのアメリカ在住日本人の人口統計、1861年から1968年までの日本からの移民統計、1913年のカリフォルニア外国人土地法、1919年に日本人会がウィルソン大統領へ提出した文書を収録する。注、資料解説、索引も付されている。
移民の経験を差別や収容だけに限定せず、世代の形成と戦後の再出発まで一続きの歴史として理解するための一冊。

This history traces Japanese migration to the United States from the earliest arrivals through exclusion, wartime removal and incarceration, the struggle for justice, and postwar recovery. It includes four appendices on population, immigration, California's Alien Land Law, and a 1919 memorial to President Wilson, followed by notes, a note on sources, and an index. First edition, 1980.
