1914年にロンドンのハマースミスにあるプライベートプレスであり20 世紀のタイポグラフィに顕著な貢献をしたDoves Pressから200部限定で刊行されました。

Coriolanus, written at the same time as Antony and Cleopatra, is one of Shakespeare's last tragedies. The play tells the story of political downfall of an elitist leader who declares that the plebeians do not deserve grain since they did not do military service. Coriolanus makes a speech against popular rule, and is banished.

He then asks his former enemies, the Volscians, for help retaliating against Rome. The Romans try to prevent this, sending his mother, wife, and daughter are all sent to reason with him. Finally, his mother, Volumnia suggests that he broker a peace treaty between Rome and the Volscians instead. While this effort is successful, upon returning to the Volscian capital, he is murdered for betraying the cause.

Now as then, politicians' choice to badmouth ordinary people can have disastrous consequences. This is a controversial play in Shakespeare studies; T.S. Elliot regarded it as a masterpiece, while Bradley did not rank it in his work Shakespearian Tragedy. Since the women around Coriolanus play a pivotal role in the story, perhaps this play should be reevaluated from a feminist perspective.

This edition of Coriolanus is the 1914 Doves Press edition, which was limited to 200 copies. Associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, William Morris, and the Kelmscott Press, Doves produced many important editions during its seventeen years of operation.

Famously, following a dispute between founders Cobden-Sanders and Walker over the rights to the Doves Type, Cobden-Sanders destroyed the matrices and punches for making the typeface and then methodically threw the type into the Thames River. We have heard that mudlarks on the Thames still find pieces of the typeface.

This copy was owned by Dutch publisher Johan Polak, who was a Jewish survivor of the holocaust and gay rights activist.
