イギリスの作家ヴァージニア・ウルフによる、女性の創作を経済的・社会的な条件から考察した長篇エッセイである。本書は1978年刊の第16刷にあたる。
本作は1928年10月にケンブリッジのニューナムとガートンで行った二つの講演をもとに、加筆と改稿を施して成立した。「女性と小説」という主題から出発し、書くための収入と専用の空間が必要であると論じる。才能を個人の資質だけで捉えず、それを育てる時間や場所が確保されているかを考えるための一冊となっている。

Virginia Woolf's essay on women and fiction was developed from two papers delivered at Newnham and Girton in October 1928, as stated in the opening footnote. The accompanying dust jacket bears Vanessa Bell's design and states "Fifteenth Impression" on the front flap. The book itself is the sixteenth impression, published in 1978.
