全6章を二部に分け、前半では相撲の起源に関する記録から宮廷行事、武芸、江戸時代の興行へと話を進める。明治期の危機と改革、相撲協会の組織化、戦後の復興を経て1970年代の相撲界までを扱う。後半では番付や相撲部屋の生活、親方による運営、入門から横綱までの昇進を解説する。土俵や行司の役割、土俵入り、取組と決まり手にも触れ、歴史の記述を競技の仕組みへとつなげている。巻末には相撲部屋の案内、注、主要参考文献、用語解説を兼ねた索引を収録する。

Includes charts, a map, Notes, a Selected Bibliography and a Glossary-Index; the illustrations on pages 182–183 and the map on page 194 are credited to Miho Miyazaki, and the jacket design to Yoshihiro Murata.
