イギリスの作家アラン・ブースによる、日本各地の10の祭りを現地での体験から綴った紀行・随筆集。本書は1982年刊の日本語注釈付き英語版にあたり、記録の対象は1981〜82年の祭礼となる。八戸えんぶり、博多どんたく、東京の三社祭、加賀百万石まつり、相馬野馬追などを訪ね、踊りや行列だけでなく、その場に集まる人々にも目を向ける。青森のねぷた、阿波踊り、北海道のまりも祭り、鞍馬の火祭、男鹿のなまはげも独立した章として取り上げる。著者自身が撮影した写真を添え、各地で目にした光景を伝えている。野中涼と阿彦周宜による日本語のはしがきを付す。注釈では語句の説明に加え、祭りの背景にも触れている。
