英語で伝えられてきたブリテンの昔話と伝説を、物語本文や要約と出典から調べるための事典。イギリスの民俗学者キャサリン・ブリッグズが編纂し、F・J・ノートンの収集資料を取り込んでいる。本書は1991年刊のペーパーバック版で、もとの全4巻をPart AとPart Bの2冊にまとめる。
Part A「昔話」は、寓話と教訓譚、魔法昔話、笑話、明確な超自然的要素を持たない物語、幼児向けの話の5群からなる。Part B「伝説」は、黒い犬、妖怪、悪魔、竜、妖精、幽霊、巨人に加え、歴史伝承、土地の伝説、起源神話、聖人、魔女などを扱う。それぞれの分類内では話の題名をアルファベット順に配列する。各部の巻頭には参照文献一覧、話型索引、題名索引を備え、関連する話を探すための相互参照を設ける。

Compiled by Katharine M. Briggs and incorporating the F. J. Norton Collection, this dictionary presents British folk narratives and legends through story texts, summaries and source references. Part A contains five groups of narratives, while Part B arranges legends under fourteen subject headings; both parts include bibliographical lists, tale-type indexes and indexes to story titles. Published in paperback in 1991, this two-book set combines Volumes 1 and 2 of each part.
