スコットランドのインド学者・サンスクリット学者であるA・B・キースによる、ヴェーダ期の宗教を文献資料から考察した研究書。1925年に刊行された全2巻の著作の前半にあたり、本書は1970年刊のインド初回リプリント。Harvard University Pressとの取り決めによる公認の再刊として刊行された。
『リグ・ヴェーダ』とその背景、後続のサンヒターとブラーフマナ文献を検討し、『アヴェスター』との比較へと進む。神々を論じる章では、ヴァルナ、インドラ、アグニ、ソーマなどを取り上げる。宇宙の成立、自然に関わる神々、祭官と英雄、悪魔的存在にも章を設け、神々と崇拝者との関係を考察する。後半では『リグ・ヴェーダ』に見られる祭式から、供犠の性格とそれに伴う儀礼へと主題を移す。贈与や呪術としての供犠、祭火、供犠に用いるもの、執行者、祈りの形式などを扱い、本文脚注に典拠と先行研究を示す。

Arthur Berriedale Keith's The Religion and Philosophy of the Veda and Upanishads, Part I, contains chapters 1-19, pages 1-312, covering sources, Vedic gods and demons, and the opening chapters on Vedic ritual. It reproduces Harvard Oriental Series volume 31, from the series edited by Charles Rockwell Lanman. First published in 1925; this copy is the authorised first Indian reprint of 1970, comprising the first volume only.
