古代ギリシアとローマから始まり、イングランド、アイルランド、ラテン諸国、ハンガリー、チェコスロヴァキア、近代ギリシア、ロシア、ルーマニア、ブルガリアへと地域を移しながら、歴史資料、伝承、記録された事例を取り上げる。序文ではサマーズ自身が本書を前著の補完編とし、ヨーロッパ諸国における吸血鬼の歴史を集めたものと説明している。巻末には索引を収録し、図版一覧にはゴヤの作品、ジョン・ディーとエドワード・ケリー、『Varney the Vampire』など8点が掲げられている。
