ラファエル前派の創設者のひとりであり、のちにロイヤル・アカデミー会長を務めた画家ジョン・エヴァレット・ミレイの生涯と書簡を、息子ジョン・ギル・ミレイがまとめた伝記。1899年刊初版・全2巻。
本書は家族や友人から提供された資料をもとに構成されている。第1巻では幼少期からロイヤル・アカデミー入学、ラファエル前派の結成を経て、1850年代から1860年代にかけての活動を扱う。ホルマン・ハント、ロセッティ、ラスキン、ディケンズ、サッカレー、ウィルキー・コリンズらに関する記述や書簡を収録する。第2巻では1867年以降の制作、家庭生活、展覧会、肖像制作、ロイヤル・アカデミー会長就任から1896年の死までを扱う。巻末には年譜、系譜、油彩、水彩、白黒作品、エッチング、版画に分けた作品一覧と索引を収録する。全319図版、うち9点のフォトグラヴュールを収録。

A two-volume biography of Sir John Everett Millais written by his son John Guille Millais, using material supplied by family, friends and relatives. It follows Millais from his early life and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood through his later career and includes 319 illustrations, including nine photogravures, together with a chronology, lineage, lists of works and an index.
