本書は全11章で構成される。柳を民藝運動の創始者としてのみ扱わず、白樺派、ウィリアム・ブレイク、アナキズム、ギルド社会主義、宗教思想との関係からその歩みを捉える。日本と朝鮮の関係や民藝運動の成立を検討し、異なる文化が個性を保ちながら共存する「複合の美」がどのように形づくられたのかを論じている。日本語原著は2003年に東京大学出版会から刊行。英語版のために新たな序文が書かれ、近年の柳研究と民藝研究を踏まえて本文にも修正と加筆が施されている。そのほか写真一覧、注、参考文献、思想年譜、人名索引、事項索引を備え、写真17点を収録する。

In Pursuit of Composite Beauty examines the intellectual development of Yanagi Sōetsu through his engagement with Blake, anarchism, Korea, guild socialism, the mingei movement, pacifism, and Buddhism. This English version of Nakami Mari's 2003 Japanese study contains a new preface, revisions and additions, seventeen photographs, notes, a bibliography, an intellectual chronology, and two indexes. First English edition, paperback with dust jacket, 2011.
