Volume Iは1904年から1912年までの文章109編を収める。新聞や文芸誌に発表された初期の書評を中心に、文学、伝記、歴史、旅、音楽、社会に関する文章を年代順に配する。109編のうち83編は従来の論集に未収録とされ、4編の付録、書誌、索引を備える。
Volume IIは1912年から1918年までの文章98編を原則として年代順に収める。ジェイン・オースティン、シャーロット・ブロンテ、ドストエフスキー、トルストイ、ソロー、ホイットマンなどを扱った書評と随筆が並ぶ。98編のうち58編は従来の論集に未収録とされ、読書ノートと雑誌に関する記録を付録として収める。巻末には書誌と索引を付す。
Volume IIIは1919年から1924年までの文章136編を収める。文学作品への批評に加えて、絵画、演劇、社会、戦争、女性、読書をめぐる文章を収録する。
。136編のうち80編は従来の論集に未収録とされ、4編の付録、書誌、索引を備える。
ウルフの文学観が、長年にわたる読書と批評の実践から形づくられていく過程を知るための重要な揃い。

Edited by Andrew McNeillie, these three volumes collect Virginia Woolf's essays, reviews, and other non-fiction writings from 1904 to 1924, arranged principally in chronological order. Each volume includes an introduction, editorial notes, appendices, a bibliography, and an index, with information on original publication and previously uncollected pieces. First editions, published in 1986, 1987, and 1988.
