本書は『ユリシーズ』刊行から50年にあたる1972年に刊行された。エルマンはジョイスが『オデュッセイア』をはじめとする古典的な構成を現代のダブリンへどのように取り入れたかを検討し、作品を新たな神話として読み解いていく。ジョイスがカルロ・リナーティとスチュアート・ギルバートに示した二つの構成表を手がかりに、各挿話に結びつけられた人物、場所、技法、芸術、身体器官などの関係を整理する。物語の筋だけでは捉えきれない作品の設計が、ジョイスの生涯や創作過程とともに論じられている。
巻末にはリナーティ表とゴーマン＝ギルバート表を比較した付録、注、索引を収録する。
複雑な『ユリシーズ』を単純な解説に置き換えず、作品全体を支える設計を理解するための基礎文献となる1冊。

Richard Ellmann examines the narrative structure and the ethical, aesthetic, and symbolic dimensions of James Joyce’s Ulysses. Using the schemata Joyce prepared for Carlo Linati and Stuart Gilbert, the study considers the relationships among the novel’s episodes, characters, techniques, arts, places, and bodily organs. The volume concludes with an appendix comparing the Linati and Gorman-Gilbert schemata, followed by notes and an index. First Faber and Faber edition, 1972.
