Stephen G. Alter examines how nineteenth-century comparative philology provided genealogical models that Darwin and other scholars used to construct parallels with the common-descent theory of evolution. The book follows these linguistic analogies from Darwin's early notebooks through later debates and includes genealogical charts drawn from works by Darwin, Schleicher, Haeckel, and others.
