本書では、神が未来の行為をあらかじめ知っているならば、人間の選択をどのように自由なものとして理解できるのかが問われる。作品の問題設定、受容史、後期中世と人文主義、ヴァッラの生涯、言語と学問に関する思想、本文構成を扱う。続いてラテン語原文とドイツ語訳を収め、巻末に参考文献を付す構成となっている。ルネサンス人文主義が、信仰と人間の自由をどのような言葉で考え直したかを知るための一冊となっている。

This bilingual edition presents Lorenzo Valla's Latin dialogue De libero arbitrio with a German translation, an introduction and a bibliography. Edited, translated and introduced by Eckhard Kessler, it addresses the relation between divine foreknowledge and human free will. Latin-German edition, 1987.
