17世紀イングランドの聖職者であるロバート・バートンによる、憂鬱を哲学、医学、宗教、文学から考察した代表作。
本書は「What it is, with all the kinds, causes, symptoms, prognostics, and several cures of it.」という副題のもと、憂鬱の原因、症状、予後、治療法について論じている。著者名はDemocritus Juniorの筆名で記されている。Advertisement、Account of the Author、著者の遺言抜粋、各種評価資料を収録。憂鬱という主題が近代以前にどのように理解されていたかを知るための基礎文献である。後年の総革装による装丁が美しい1861年版。

A nineteenth-century edition of Robert Burton's classic work on melancholy, originally published in 1621 under the pseudonym "Democritus Junior." The volume includes a reproduction of the original frontispiece, an advertisement, an account of the author, extracts relating to Burton's life, and the text of The Anatomy of Melancholy. Published by William Tegg in 1861.
